Introduction for the Weathering Project
The Weathering collection is now completed and due for exhibition at The Great Atlantic Gallery in Falmouth at the end of August. I have also recently completed the introduction/press release for the collection, here is a chance for some insight into the upcoming exhibition.

Weathering – Tors – Prometheus on his crag.

The inception of this project began with a trip to Dartmoor in October 2006. This encounter found me walking to the source of three rivers, where there is now a memorial stone to Ted Hughes. Knowing this a copy of Moortown was in the backpack containing Prometheus on his crag. With out wishing the work to become autobiographical it has indeed done so. How closely linking my own experience would become with both the landscape of Dartmoor and the story of Prometheus is reflected in the body of work I now present.

I have visited this wild and beautiful place in all weathers and seasons. At times for a day other trips have been for many days. Out on the moor with sketchbook, sleeping bag and my constant companion Rupert (the Dalmatian).

The journeys have coincided with a mental exhaustion and physical well being, returning from the moor mentally rejuvenated and physically spent. This coexistence became important in attaining the balanced state for the creation of the new paintings.

The walk is a vital and integral part in the creation of my work. Franz Kafka described the walk as something where you

‘Attain your true form’
    from-The sudden walk- Franz Kafka.

This has echoed and reverberated in my own experience.

The works are focused on the highest and often the most remote Tor’s found on Dartmoor. The process of the creation of the Tor’s is known as weathering. This also relates directly to the creation of the paintings.  As on the moor the core of the painting is what hopefully remains.

This dialogue between the landscape, literature and painting has a tension that is incredibly stimulating and all consuming. Leading to a depth of understanding that steps beyond the purely visual.

This project has encompassed a time in my life, which has contained great joy and it's opposite. The hope for my work is that It gives a sense of what it is to be human, what it is to feel and experience life in all it wonderful glory.
