Dartmoor Hay and Hound Tor's
After spending many hours in the studio recently the air was becoming quite toxic with the fumes from the white spirit.
So yesterday found Rupert and I escaping the studio for a return visit onto Dartmoor.
The current project is developing a pace. We found our way from Hay Tor via the quarry's and Templer way over to Hound Tor.

Hay Tor
The more of the Tor's that I visit it is becoming clear how different the structure and colour of the stone is. Hay Tor is very coarse granite.

Detail of Hay Tor
This appears to have main constituents of Quarts, which is the rectangular element grey glass like: mica which is black: and Felspar buff coloured angular plates. Not sure what the red/burnt element is Iron perhaps?
It's also very noticeable on Hay tor that moss and lichen only appears to grow on the north side.

On route to Hound Tor I explored the Quarry area's. This area has a calm stillness out of the wind, that's a constant on the moor. This area was formed around 290 million years ago, the quarry opened in the 1820's I am unsure whether I agree with the name given to the owner of the quarry as 'The Improver'. Perhaps now that nature is taking it back that is certainly an improvement. The stone from this part of Dartmoor was used in the construction of London Bridge.

Then on to Hound Tor.
Lots of drawing done and time will reveal the true success of this trip, in the paintings.

Good Luck to Juliette Paull, her first Solo show is opening tonight at The new Millennium Gallery in St Ives . I had the chance to see the paintings in the studio it is a brave collection. It is a very open and honest body of work. Runs for three weeks and the catalogue is available as a download from The New Millennium Gallery.
