Artist Statement - Unearth
The influence and inspiration for this collection emanate from the penwith moorlands, with which my fascination continues to develop and deepen.
Within my work i currently have no desire to capture the fleeting moment. The paintings are intended to conjure with the internal essence of place. The ephemera of soil and granite that find their way on to the canvas are collected directly from the site that inspires the piece. Starting the process of understanding the locations elemental nature.
The secondary influence but by no means any less relevant to this project is a collection of poems of the same title 'Unearth' by the American author and poet Paul Auster. Before each drawing trip (much to the annoyance of rupert my dog) i would read a poem from the collection. Words and phrasing somehow stimulated the selection of location and choice of composition. Later finding their way into the titles of the finished paintings.
The paintings, as the environs that inspired and the poetry that informed them, start to have their own voice. You just have to listen.

'Each syllable is the work of sabotage.' Paul Auster.
